...was just what it sounds like. The house needed to have basically every piece of drywall, every scrap of horsehair plaster, every wire, every tile removed. And why do it yourselves when you can convince your friends that it will be fun? So just a few days after closing on the house we invited a small crew of friends over, doled out the protective masks and started swinging the sledgehammers. We didn't get a lot of pictures because we were so busy working. Our friend Kyle's shirt (below) will bear witness to how hard we worked.
As you can see in the bottom right photo, we cleared out EVERYTHING from the upstairs of the newer section. It's just a big empty space. None of the internal walls were load-bearing, so now we have leeway to rebuild that entire floor however we want.
