A quirky quilt

My good friend Carrie in Miami has an 18 month old son -- my adorable godson Gavin -- and she recently sent me a huge box of toys and baby miscellanea for Johnnie that Gavin has outgrown. When I called to thank her for the treasure trove of stuff, the very first thing she said was, "Did you look at the quilt?"

I had looked at it -- it was made from an array of blue fabric scraps and was a charming little thing. I was actually surprised she sent it to me, as I assumed a handmade item would have more sentimental value to her.

I said yes, I had looked at it, and I couldn't believe she sent me a quilt that was homemade especially for her son. "You obviously didn't flip it over..." she said. I hadn't, I admitted. She waited while I dug it out of the box and unfolded it to look at the reverse side...........

Oh. My. Gosh. There are no words, right? Though Carrie was touched that a friend's mom had taken the time to make a quilt for Gavin, she was a little too shy to ask what the heck the woman was thinking. Carrie's husband wasn't overly excited about letting his son lie on it, so she sent it to me -- though she wasn't sure we'd feel comfortable letting our daughter lie on it either. It's just universally inappropriate.

Though the nursery still really needs some decorating help, the quilt does not usually hang over the back of the rocking chair. It sits on a shelf in the cabinet, waiting for my next unsuspecting close friend or family member to give birth. Hehehe...
