FLOORING: DAY 1

Here's Jack's progress on Day 1. We were hoping for him to be further along, but he ran into some dreaded "Old House Problems" (you know the kind) that took some extra time to work around. He started in the office, an open area off the master bedroom that has stairs down into the kitchen and two doors leading into the laundry and closet areas. It already feels more like a room than it ever did. New flooring, even before it's finished, makes everything feel so clean -- a state of being this house has possibly never known before.

Jack kind of stresses me out though. He's always finding problems, and I hear the dollar signs ca-chinging in my ear every time. I'm not a plumber but I think your toilet is going to be too close to the chimney. You're gonna have to get a railing guy in here so I can finish this area around the stairs. $$ Your compressor blew out my hose. $$$ The steps are crooked. $$$$ What's happening with this transition area over here? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Moral of this story: hiring someone to do your dirty work doesn't necessarily mean you get to escape all the tough decisions and problems of working on an old house. That said, it's awfully nice coming home at the end of a long day and seeing progress.

Alrighty, more grainy iPhone photos just for kicks, even though that hideous plywood, fire engine red underlayment and phlegmy-looking spray foam are killing the vibe a little:

Here's hoping Day 2 goes well and that all the problems magically disappear. Make it so, Jack. I believe in you.

  1. Ha, with a contractor for a husband...trust me, I know all about old home problems. He does renovations but he sometimes hates them because you never know what you're going to find when you demo. :)
The floors are going to look great! It must be so nice to be getting a major project done.

    1. Indeed. Day 2 was not so good though. I could see that he fiddled around with the area around the stairs for a bit, but there was no visible progress made anywhere. One additional board had been added. I learned later that he wasn't there long, which was a relief. Apparently he had some epiphany and should be able to make some progress today. I hope!
