MASTER BEDROOM PROGRESS

Confession: we hired painters. I feel a teensy bit guilty admitting that, considering this is basically a DIY blog and painting is DIY 101... But, since it took me weeks to prime all 8+ remaining rooms by myself (using thick, uncooperative oil-based Kilz primer and applying 3 coats on the wood planks to prevent the knots from bleeding through), there was no way I was going to be able to go back and paint everything in a reasonable amount of time. I am spent, you guys. SPENT!

New Year's Resolution: Stop being so spent all the time.

So now the master bedroom, bathroom and closet are painted, along with the laundry room, office, dining room, entry, powder room and coat closet. (Whew!) That's a lot of rooms, but the painting crew got it done in a single weekend. I am so, so thrilled that job is no longer on my plate -- I'd have been painting until next Christmas, no joke. We had every room painted the same color. I know it's not very exciting, but eventually I will probably choose to repaint a few areas after we have some time to get acquainted with the spaces. In the meantime, this "shades of white" vibe feels clean, calm and innocuous, and those are words that sound very appealing to me these days.

Anyway, what you're looking at here are the various angles of a cluttered but almost finished master bedroom, complete with freshly painted walls and ceilings. Literally, all that's left to do in here from a "construction" standpoint is:
  • Install a vent cover, can light covers and one pendant light (currently back-ordered)
  • Window and accent trim
  • Baseboard
  • Stain and poly the floors
  • Stain the logs (that was never done in here for some reason)
That's it. Then we can move in! And here's the opposite wall...

Apologies that I didn't kick some of that junk out of the frame, or take the plastic wrap off the smoke detector...

There is just enough room for a king-sized bed (if we even go that route) between those two adjustable reading lights, which I got on sale at HomeDecorators.com. I wanted hardwired lights so we could have more room on our bedside tables (which will have to be pretty small) as well as avoid the visual clutter of electrical cords. I knock over my bedside lamp on a regular basis while reaching for my glasses, so this is exciting in my world. Since this is the only wall where you can easily fit a bed in here, I figured hardwiring was a fairly safe bet.

This is the same angle, five years ago...

Hard to believe it's the same room... Or the same lifetime!

  1. I'm joining in late in the game but it looks incredible! What a transformation. It must be so nice looking at the 'before' pictures compared to what you see today.

    1. Thank you! Looking back is both satisfying and exhausting. I only do it in small doses!

  2. Wow! What a transformation! This room is simply amazing and will be such a well-deserved retreat for you. And I love those lights. I wish we had hardwired lights by our bed, but I couldn't commit. Next time, I commit.

Also - no judging here for hiring out painting. Girl. You have more than proven your DIY prowess. You have to do what makes you less crazy. I'm learning that slowly.

    1. Thanks -- 'retreat' is really what I'm going for. It's another part of my plot to eliminate as much crazy as possible. :)

  3. No shame in hiring painters. I think a true DIY-er knows when to hire it out so you can focus your talents and energies on something else!
It looks fantastic. Hard to believe that before picture!
Also, I plan to have some reading lamps hardwired and hung eventually...once I can decide what lights to commit to. Where did you get yours?

    1. I hunted for a long time before I made the lamps purchase... I think I pinned dozens of options on Pinterest. If price hadn't been one of the factors I might have chosen something else, but so far I'm really happy with these. I think it was an extra hard decision for me because I had to make the decision before anything else was in the room. They can always be switched out for something else down the line, though, which helps with my commitment-phobia.

I got them at HomeDecorators.com and googled for a promo code for I think 15% or 20% off. (Here is the exact item: http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Accordion_Wall_Lamp/280/)

  4. it really is a bedroom........I love the white walls! White always seem calm then I like to drop in a single item of color like say a quilt or throw and maybe a pillow. l love to hire finish painters because they can magically paint straight lines! huge congratulations go out to you and your husband.

    1. It's true -- they did a much better job and got the lines much straighter than I ever could have, in a fraction of the time. Worth it.

  5. I've been following your blog for a few months and have never commented but WOW! What a vision you had! It is beautiful, truly beautiful. And perfect in white. I feel any "color" would look forced and this is peaceful and gorgeous. Congratulations!!! and don't sweat the hiring out. Sometimes it is more important to save your sanity!

    1. Thank you -- and thanks for coming out of hiding to comment! I'm so excited to see it coming together. I had my doubts about that "vision" along the way, for sure, but we're getting there!
